Retro Reaction 17.3 Batman – The Joker is Wild / Batman is Wild (1966)

Much like last weeks Reaction this 2 parter (which is one story – so we shall review as one) gains points for breaking an established formula. I have written before about my love for this absolutely great series. In Season One we have a run of episodes that are on par quality wise with the Movie. What we get in these two episodes is a Batman Joker Story that is of movie quality.

What we have on TV is a Batman Joker Movie practically. This is Cesar Romero’s Debt and best Joker performance. It is in my estimation up here with the Movie Jokers.  (Perhaps i am a little biased. These episodes were my first look at the Joker and he is fascinating)

The formula break comes early in the episode when Batman is put in a death trap in the middle of the episode rather than at the end. Usually the trap was the cliffhanger but at the end of Joker is Wild we are treated to an altogether different cliffhanger as the Joker decided to publicly unmask Batman and Robin (something he only tries in this episode). Much like the Rangers episode this was exciting stuff. At this point i actually rate this story above the 66 movie.

We leave the episode with the following questions read to us.

COULD THIS MEAN CURTAINS??
WILL THE IDENTITIES OF OUR DYNAMIC DUO BE REVEALED TO THE WHOLE WORLD??
IS THIS THE END OF THEIR CAREER AS CRIMEFIGHTERS??
CAN THEY AVERT DISASTER??
ANSWERS… TOMORROW NIGHT! SAME TIME, SAME CHANNEL!

Batman is Riled dos a great job of Batman addressing the negative media attention. The Joker breaks into the TV broadcaster in a similar way as he does in “The Laughing Fish” that was adapted for the 1990s animated series and in the Dark Knight. This is Cesar Romero’s best take on the Joker and one that arguably shaped some of the clown princes later character traits.

These favourite episodes are my own opinion. This Joker story is a great Batman Story, perhaps not as big on the humour we see in Hi Diddle Riddle or The Purr-fect Crime it is what stands out to me as the best of the Season, and arguably the series.

Until Next time

Have a great dayyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!
